M12 connectors in accordance with IEC 61076-2-101 are the standard interface in industrial sensor and actuator technology. Their compact design, featuring an M12x1 metric thread, enables space-saving installations whilst offering high mechanical strength.

Technical details

The available M12 connectors with A-coding cover pin counts ranging from 3 to 8. Cable connectors are available in both straight and angled versions, whilst flange connectors are designed for direct mounting on equipment. The IP67 protection rating ensures dust-tightness and protection against temporary submersion. Housing materials include nickel-plated brass for high mechanical stress or PBT plastic for weight-critical applications. The connection options include solder, screw and crimp versions. Pre-assembled PUR cables with M12 connectors (straight/angled) on both ends are available in various standard lengths.

Applications

M12 connectors are used wherever robust and compact sensor connections are required. In factory automation, they connect inductive and capacitive proximity switches, as well as optical sensors, to the control system. In process applications, they serve as an interface for pressure transducers and temperature sensors. The 4-pin version has established itself as the standard for IO-Link communication, whilst 8-pin variants are increasingly being used in robotics for motor connections with integrated sensors.
